- Elon musk’ SpaceX Falcon rocket launched carrying NASA’s two astronauts.
- First time in history that any private company has launched astronauts into the space.
- Spacecraft Crew Dragon’s capsule has been renamed as ‘Endeavour’ after reaching ISS.
- Against the appeal, around 1.5 lac people gathered outside the launching site.
SpaceX is a private organization that is known for its contribution toward space technology. This company was founded by Elon Musk to colonize mars one day. SpaceX was the first private organization to put a payload into Earth’s orbit in 2008. Since then the company continued to impress everyone by launching various unmanned cargo vehicles to the International Space Station (ISS). NASA was so impressed with the SpaceX that they contacted it to fly some astronauts to International Space Station (ISS) in 2017.Clearly,Elon Musk’ SpaceX company has been a pioneer in exploring the space that is not owned by the government.
Why Unprecedented ?
Elon Musk with NASA was burning mid-night oil since long to send astronauts into the ISS.Finally,a Dragon Crew is launched successfully ferrying 2 astronauts named Doughlas G. Hurley and Robert L. Behnken. The history has been made by launching the SpaceX Falcon Rocket carrying the NASA’s Astronauts aboard the company’s ‘Crew Dragon Spacecraft’ from Kennedy Space center’s launch pad 39A at 3:22 p.m EDT.With this launch era of Commercial Crew lauch has been started. This is the first time in history when any private organisation has sent the astronauts in the space.
This day is also special for USA as a nation because the country has sent the astronauts to the space after the gap of around 9 years.
“What a great day for NASA, what a great day for SpaceX and what a great day for USA”, said NASA’s administrator Jim Bridenstine
I’d like to just acknowledge the incredible work of the people at SpaceX and NASA and everyone who created this technology – what has culminated in this incredible launch today, getting astronauts back to orbit after almost a decade. We need to bring them back safely, and we need to repeat these missions and have this be a regular occurrence. There’s a lot of work to do.Elon Musk (SpaceX Chief Engineer)
Musk was born in 1971 in South Africa. Educated in business and physics from the University of Pennsylvania. Before starting SpaceX, he accumulated a large wealth as co-founder of PayPal and founder of Tesla Motors and SolarCity. In 2002, he founded Space Exploration Technologies Corporation or SpaceX competing with other companies such as Boeing and Virginia-based Orbital Sciences. SpaceX came into headlines for the first time in 2010 when they launched a payload and were able to return it to Earth intact- something like NASA and Russia’s Roscosmos has done before. In 2017 they started designing their first manned vehicle named Dragon Capsule. Last year they tested it in an unmanned mission. Yesterday they successfully launched two astronauts into the space.
Crew Members :
The astronauts are Doughlas G. Hurley and Robert L. Behnken. In addition to this, both of them are married to astronauts. They are friends and colleagues since they started working for NASA as astronauts in 2000. They both have backgrounds as military test pilots and have each flown twice on space shuttle missions, in spite of being acquaintances, this is the first time they have worked together on mission. Mr. Hurly flew on the space shuttle mission in 2011. Apart from this, they both were assigned to the first SpaceX flight in 2018.
The Vehicle :
Elon Musk’ SpaceX has used the Dragon Capsule to ferry the astronauts to the ISS. Dragon Capsule was designed to carry the passengers but has been tested many times in unmanned missions, previously. This capsule has space of 7 people but SpaceX has decided to limit the number of astronauts to 4 for missions of NASA. The capsule carrying both the astronaut was given no name until it got to orbit. Saturday night astronauts announced the name they had given it ; Endeavour.
Launch Station :
The launch took place at the same place where it all started. From where the Apollo mission took off; Florida. NASA warned the people to stay indoors to limit the spread of CORONA VIRUS but around 150000 people came out to view the launch from Kennedy Space Center.
We looked at the weather. It didn’t look great, but we looked at the different options that were out there, and we realized how important it was to step through this carefully, weigh the readiness of the hardware and very carefully assess the situation, and be able to clear the gates and milestones along the wayKathy Lueders (Manager ; NASA’s commercial Crew Program )
Arrival at the Space Station :
The crew is scheduled to arrive at the ISS 19 hours after the launch. The capsule is fully automatic. So, unless something goes wrong, the crew Dragon’s computers usually handle all of the maneuvering and docking procedures.
The Elon Musk’ SpaceX capsule is going to ferry four astronauts later this year.Undoubtedly, this is going to encourage the other private companies to join the wagon of space exploration with NASA & SpaceX.Without a doubt, this event in history will be remembered as the milestone to explore the life at other planets.
